Hi Cara,

Thanks for all the tips - we can't wait. We are leaving on April 13th and will be back on the 24th.

Oh Jonathan, you are in for a real treat! Visiting those divine cities for the first time...I guarantee you it won't be the last!! Italy is a universe unto itself - every town, village, hamlet is special. And the food...the wine...I go on a diet before each trip to be ready for the onslaught of heavenly aromas and tastes. All the monuments and buildings are a pleasure. Don't miss the David in Florence, the real one in the Academia. There is a "fake" in the Piazza di Signoria - not bad but nothing like the original. It positively glows. Go to "I Latini'" restaurant in Florence - lots of fun, sharing tables with other diners, big plates of food - better if you're not a vegetarian there! Some major art is in the Uffizi Gallery - it's small and takes about an hour and takes your breath away, you walk down the halls and see one great masterpiece after another.

St. Marks Square in Venice makes my heart stop every trip. All those pigeons! - the music playing in the square is a delight; walking around the Rialto Bridge and finding hidden shops and back-alleys...we even took a gondola ride last trip which was very cool. Be sure to take the water-taxi or whatever it's called to the different parts of town. It's like a ferry/bus and you can catch it from several stops. You go all around the Grand Canal and see the old palazzos and grand hotels that you can't see from the main part of town. I'm green with envy just writing about it!

And of course Rome - walking around that city, wherever you are, is wonderful. Check out the guy in Piazza Navona who mimes with finger puppets! He is fantastic. Ignore the stooped-over "old" beggar ladies - it's a scam. Run to the Vatican to see the Sistine Chapel, you won't regret it, it's one of the most powerful art pieces in the world. The rooms leading to the Chapel are filled with magnificent art and treasures - give yourself a day there. Eat a gelato and throw coins in the Fontana di Trevi. Be a tourist!! If there's a musical playing at the Theatre try to catch it - we saw "Chicago" last May and it was a blast! Especially if you're familiar with the English version of whatever is playing. I'm sure you have guidebooks but if you can get a guide to walk you thru the Forum it's worth it - they tell you all sorts of interesting history and stories that you don't get from the books.

When exactly will you be there? I'll be back in Florence on the 5th and 6th of April, leaving on the 7th to come home. I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences. Be sure to fill us in! And thanks again for your birthday wishes!

Buon viaggio! xo Cara

Barbara, I smiled when I read "wherever you may be"!! You got it - I'm off
Tuesday to Italy on a mini-buying maxi-pleasure trip, then to Berlin to
check it out, finally. Hear wonderful things about the city and am eager to
experience it myself. Will send on any interesting tidbits.
Thanks for the Birthday love, it warms my heart.
